What US IRS Tax information should I know? (1099 tax form queries)

What is an IRS 1099 Form?

The 1099 Form is a series of documents the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) refers to as “information returns.” There are a number of different 1099 forms that report the various types of income other than a salary. The IRS requires TripAdvisor Vacation Rentals to report annual user rent disbursements to the IRS using a 1099 Misc form.

 

Who will receive an IRS 1099 tax Form?

The account owner on our records will receive an IRS 1099 Misc form if they are a US citizen and have earned at least $600 from bookings last year.

Go to Track payments > My payouts to view your earnings for the year.

 

How and when will I receive the 1099 form?

Disbursements through a bank account: We automatically send this form to all eligible payments users who receive funds directly to a US bank account. All forms are mailed out via post by January 31.
 

Please note: The form will be sent to the person on the account who receives the payouts, e.g. if John is the person listed on the account but it is Jane’s bank account information saved on the Payout settings, then the form will be sent to Jane.

Disbursements through PayPal: If you receive payments for bookings to a PayPal account, then you will need to get in touch with PayPal directly. We do not issue 1099 forms for PayPal users.
 

Non-US citizens: As a US company we are required to collect basic tax information to certify that you are not a US Citizen/US company and/or have withholding requirements. Please follow the instructions on the Tax section of your owner center - it will only take a couple of minutes.



Can I make changes to my 1099 form?

Yes. Go to Tax on your account where you can view the tax details you’ve submitted to us and make changes.

 

What if some information on my 1099 form is incorrect?

If you find that once you’ve received the 1099 form and some of the information on it is incorrect, then please contact us detailing the information that needs to be amended. Also, make sure that you also update your tax details here.   

 

What should I do if I haven’t received my 1099 form by 31 March?

If you still haven’t received the 1099 form and meet the requirements above, then please contact us and we will check for you.
